Summer in the City 2017

Summer in the City, presented by Owens Corning officially welcomed more than 300 interns to the Toledo Region.  The program, created in 2015 by the Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce, showcases area businesses and attractions to interns from around the country.

Through a series of six fun events at locations throughout Toledo, interns had the opportunity to meet one another and young professionals in the community. The summer program kicked off at the Toledo Museum of Art's GlasSalon with welcoming remarks from Adam Levine, Associate Director TMA, Toledo Mayor, Paula Hicks-Hudson, and Chamber President, Wendy Gramza. As part of the schedule of events, more than 100 interns enjoyed the 2017 EPIC Toledo T-Town Dash where teams of six competed in a downtown scavenger hunt for a chance to win the grand prize, a tour with The Handlebar Toledo. Other social events included an evening of kayaking and archery at the Middlegrounds Metropark, private picnic on Fleetwood’s rooftop combined with tickets to a Toledo Mud Hens Game, food and music on the roof of the downtown library courtesy of Downtown 419 and EPIC Toledo, an End of Summer Party at the Toledo Zoo & Aquarium’s new Malawai Event Center and tickets to the 2017 Marathon LPGA Classic.

The Business Breakfast series provided the chance for interns to network with employees, tour facilities, and learn about the industries and economy of the Toledo Region. Interns had the opportunity to meet prominent business leaders such as Jeff Cole, Senior Director of Corporate Communications with Dana, Don Rettig, Director of Community Relations and President of the Owens Corning Foundation, Carol Summersgill, Vice President of HR for Libbey Glass and many more at each breakfast.  Other host companies included The Collaborative, North Design, SSOE, Hylant, Welltower, and the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library.

Through a partnership with EPIC Toledo, interns were matched with an EPIC member. Each EPIC member invited their assigned interns to connect over coffee or lunch to learn about how they live as a young professional in the Toledo community.
