USS Toledo Visits Toledo, OH

A U.S. Navy Submarine named the USS Toledo, along with its crew, sailed into its namesake city for a three-day visit this July.

From July 17 - the 19th, Commanding Officer Orville W. Cave II and five crew members enjoyed a packed schedule while visiting several notable Toledo landmarks including the Toledo Museum of Art, the University of Toledo, the FCA North Assembly Plant and ProMedica Children’s Hospital.

They enjoyed numerous receptions while in town, one hosted by the National Museum of the Great Lakes, one hosted by the Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce at the Toledo Club, dinner at Tony Packo’s restaurant and pre-game ceremonies and honors at a Mudhens Game.

According to a Public Affairs Officer with the Submarine Force – U.S. Atlantic Fleet, the crew of the USS Toledo keeps artifacts and memorabilia from Toledo in the submarine, with the submarine’s galley named the Blade Café, after the Toledo Region newspaper.

The USS Toledo and its crew have a special relationship with the city, as “Commanding officers and crew members have visited the city as least a half a dozen times, and have hosted visits from Toledo representatives”.

The submarine was commissioned in February 1995, at the US Navel Base in Norfolk, Va. It is 300 feet long, weighs 6,900 tons and is armed with Tomahawk missiles.

We thank the crew of the USS Toledo for their visit and continued service to our nation.
